Structural engineering for West Point homes, shops, and barns.

West Point is 91% single-family and built on big lots. That means a lot of detached shops, pole barns, and outbuilding work — and we do a lot of it.

West Point is our literal next-door neighbor — a 5-minute drive from the office. It's also one of our favorite cities to work in because of how distinctively West Point its projects are. Almost the entire city is single-family on lots that are bigger than what you'd find in Syracuse or Layton, which means the work is heavily skewed toward outbuildings: shops, pole barns, oversized garages, and the occasional horse facility.

What West Point projects look like

  • Pole barns and shops. The bread and butter of West Point work for us. We design the engineered pole frame, truss system, lateral bracing, anchor design, and slab if the building has one. Most pole barn engineering packages are $1,200–$2,500 depending on size.
  • Detached oversized garages. 30x40 and bigger detached garages are common on West Point lots. Engineering is required once you exceed prescriptive code tables.
  • Home additions. The newer West Point subdivisions are starting to generate addition work as families outgrow their original layouts.
  • Patio covers and decks. Big back yards mean big outdoor living projects. Snow load matters for any covered structure.
  • ADUs. Internal and the occasional detached.

West Point things to know

  • Lot zoning matters. Some West Point lots are zoned agricultural and have different rules than standard residential. Building department first, designer second.
  • Wind exposure. The west side of Davis County gets steady wind off the Great Salt Lake. We design lateral systems on outbuildings with that in mind.
  • Snow load on long-span trusses. Pole barns and shops with 40+ ft truss spans see meaningful snow loads. The truss manufacturer's standard package usually needs engineering review for our specific local conditions.

A recent West Point project

A homeowner with horses needed a 40x60 covered hay storage and equipment shed on a 1-acre lot. We designed the engineered pole frame, the snow-load-rated trusses, the lateral bracing, and the anchor system, and stamped the package. Permit approved on first submission and the structure went up in three weeks.

Working with us in West Point

We're 5 minutes away. Same-day visits aren't unusual, and we love the West Point work — it's the kind of practical, engineering-heavy small project that makes the job satisfying.

FAQ

Questions from West Point homeowners

Do shops and pole barns need engineering in West Point?

Almost always. Any large detached structure — pole barn, shop, oversized garage, hay storage — needs engineered plans for the truss system, the lateral bracing, and the anchor design. West Point's big lots make these projects common, and we've designed a lot of them.

Are there extra rules for outbuildings on agricultural lots in West Point?

It depends on the zoning of your specific lot. Some West Point parcels are zoned agricultural with different setback and use rules than typical residential. The city building department is the right first call before you commit to a structure size.

Are detached ADUs allowed in West Point?

West Point allows ADUs in compliance with HB 82 and local ordinance. The exact rules around detached units vary — definitely worth a call to the building department before designing.
